Ingredients
  • 100 g Grated natural bar soapOne full 100 g bar, grated finely.
  • 200 g Baking sodaSodium bicarbonate.
  • 200 g Washing sodaSodium carbonate — not the same.
  • 100 g Epsom salt (optional)Water softening for hard-water regions.
  • Few drops Essential oil (opt.)Omit entirely for baby clothes.
Method
  1. Grate the soap bar finely. A box grater works; food processor is faster.
  2. Mix thoroughly with the baking soda, washing soda, and Epsom salt if using.
  3. Add essential oil last, drop by drop, stirring as you go. Skip for baby loads.
  4. Store in a glass jar or airtight container. Keep dry.
Usage

1–2 tbsp per load. Add 1/2 cup white vinegar to the softener compartment for extra freshness.

Heads up · baking soda vs washing soda

The two are not interchangeable. If your shop only stocks baking soda, convert it: bake at 200°C for an hour, stirring once. Texture goes from fine to gritty — that's washing soda.
